The Client Assessment Scale (CAS)
The Client Assessment Scale(CAS) was developed by Dr. Merrill for use by attorneys working with clients in the divorce process. The CAS offers a method of developing supplemental information to assist professionals in identifying those possibly at risk. It is also thought to be appropriate for use by others who are involved in that process.
No decisions should be made soley on the basis of data generated by the Client Assessment Scale.
DIRECTIONS FOR CLIENT ASSESSMENT SCALE
1. Determine if your client is the initiator or the non-initiator of the divorce. If initiator place 5 points. in right hand column, if no, place 10 points in right hand column.
2. Determine duration of the marriage and place corresponding points in right hand column.
3. In your interview with the client, determine whether they are in a positive primary relationship. Naturally, if they are in the process of divorce, they are not in a positive primary relationship. However, they may have moved on into a new, successful primary relationship. Next, determine if they are employed, have a job, etc. Finally, determine if they have a regular source of enjoyment that they consider play. It must be regular and provide them with positive feedback. Going to the movies once a week etc. does not count.
Place a check next to each category if it is not present in your client's life. Add the checks and place the appropriate points (0, 10 or 20) in the right hand column.
4. Determine how long your client has been separated and locate appropriate points under initiator or non-initiator column. Place the appropriate points in the right hand column.
5. If your client's income is dependent on their spouse, determine if they are the initiator or non-initiator and place the appropriate figure (5 or 10 respectively) in the right hand column.
6. Determine if this is the client's first marriage. If so, place the appropriate figure in the right hand column, e.g. 5 if they are the initiator and 10 if they are the non-initiator.
7. Determine what kind of support system your client has. For each category (family, friends and/or spiritual such as church or synagogue, etc.) that is absent, place a check next to that category. Count the number of checks and place the appropriate point score (10, 5 or 0) in the right hand column.
